Risk evaluation workshop guides Norrköping to choose the most sustainable brownfield remediation methods

The Norrköping’s Pilot Site “Inre Hamnen” is located in the place of old gasworks that used to produce gas, tar and coke. Due to the industrial history, the site that will be transformed to a new city district with 800 apartments in the next decade, is heavily contaminated with tar, benzenes, cyanides and heavy metals. Before the transformation process can start, the site needs to be remediated.

Citizens invited to develop Tallinn’s Urban Planning Application

As part of the Baltic Urban Lab activities, the city of Tallinn is developing an Urban Planning Mobile Application, which complements the existing Planning Register, where citizens can comment city’s development plans. With the App, the users would have fast and easy access to information about the on-going planning processes and the possibility to comment and leave their own proposals. The App would allow users to receive information on the spot of the future plans for places they are visiting.

New publication! Public–Private–People Partnerships in Urban Planning

Are you interested in implementing public-private-people partnerships in your city?  Baltic Urban Lab has published a new working paper "Paper Public–Private–People Partnerships in Urban Planning" prepared by Nordregio that discusses the potentials and challenges public-private-people partnerships can bring in urban planning and development with a particular attention paid to public-private-people partnership (4P) approaches in regards to brownfield regeneration – the focus of Baltic Urban Lab. The Working Paper also gives practical examples of how cities can succesfully involve various actors in their planning processes.

Skoone Activity Belt Workshop Engages Local Students

The city partner Tallinn together with associated partner Tallinn University organized a three day workshop focused on the Skoone Activity Belt from September 27 to 29. The event included an opening panel and presentations on the project, the pilot site, its surroundings as well as inspirational examples from elsewhere in the region. This was followed by a tour of the pilot site, where participants could walk through the brownfield area.

First Project Meeting in Stockholm

The project conducted its first project meeting in Stockholm from September 7 to 9. During the three days, the project partners were hosted by Nordregio at its beatiful premises on the island of Skeppsholmen. The event included updates on the project’s progress and next steps, practical guidance for project implementation, action plans presented by the city pilots, a study visit to the Royal Seaport and a visiting speaker from Forum Virium Helsinki.

Transparency and user-friendliness of the Tallinn Planning Register

Tallinn Urban Planning Department carried out a survey about Tallinn Planning Register user experience.  Planning Register  is a transparent online tool for both city planners and citizens. City general and detail plans are available for the public in that Register.

Survey results give a valuable insight into how wider public estimate our register system as an involvement tool and what are development needs and  mobile app design. Planning Register mobile app will be a new involvement tool tested within Baltic Urban Lab project in Tallinn.

Stakeholders gathered to innovate future of Kupittaa

The City of Turku organized an Open Call event on June 16, 2016 to mark the beginning of the planning process for the city’s campus area and Science Park in Kupittaa. The event gathered key stakeholders from the area to discuss and brainstorm what the future of the campus area and science park could look like. Baltic Urban Lab’s pilot site in Itäharju is closely connected to the planning process and project partners from UBC, University of Turku and the City of Turku took part in the event.

Focus groups help Norrköping in the planning process

Turning an old harbour into an attractive part of the city centre is tricky. To find out more about the public’s needs, wishes, fears, hopes and dreams Norrköping decided to invite the public to a series of focus groups' meetings.

Norrköping is conducting an extensive transformation of the old Inner harbour. The area will become a natural part of Norrköping’s city centre with, parks, canals, quays, shops, restaurants and 2 000 new homes. The municipality’s aim is to create a living room for all – for residents as well as visitors.

New Times and Dynamics in Söderhamn

The Union of the Baltic Cities Planning Cities Commission meeting New Times – New Dynamics took place in in Söderhamn from May 22nd to May 25th. The head of the UBC Sustainable Cities Commision Secretariat Björn Grönholm participated in the event and presented Baltic Urban Lab along with UBC’s iWater project. Söderhamn itself is in the process of developing its brownfield areas.
