Baltic Urban Lab video premiere!

A video has been produced by Laura Sarlin of UBC Sustainable Cities Commission to promote Baltic Urban Lab's Final Conference "Dealing with the Past and Planning for the Future - transforming urban brownfields into possibilities" that will be held 6-7 September 2018 in the City of Riga, Latvia. 

The video tells a story of the three-year project, focusing mainly on the last Joint City Pilot Review event in City of Tallinn, but also clips from previous project meetings and workshops from Turku, Tallinn and Norrköping could be seen.

Save the date - Baltic Urban Lab's Final Conference 6.-7.9.2018

Baltic Urban Lab Final Conference "Dealing with the past & Planning for the future - turning urban brownfields into possibilities" will be held in Riga, Latvia, during 6-7 September 2018. Two crucial topics will be covered around browfield development - how to deal with the site's past and possible contamination of soil and at the same time develop visions and plan for the future land-use of the site in cooperation with stakeholders.

Earth Autopsy makes it possible to interact with contamination in a new way

Since the Earth Autopsy launch back in December 2017, the visualisation tool has been presented to a variety of stakeholders and international audiences. Earth Autopsy has been developed by City of Norrköping in cooperation with a local company.

Final Peer Review Meeting took place in Tallinn


The heritage protected pilot site of Skoone Bastion – boasting extensive historical background – was observed from the temporary use viewpoint during the meeting where urban planners from Sweden, Latvia and Finland gathered to discuss and exchange experiences with each other.

Definition for brownfield areas & national recommendations published!

Baltic Urban Lab project has published a definition for urban brownfields. There are no commonly agreed European definitions on what a brownfield is. The definition published by the project emphasizes the importance of integrated and partnership based approach for the redevelopment of brownfield areas.

Baltic Urban Lab represented at the Annual Days of Soil Protection and Soil Research

The annual days of soil protection and soil research were held on 14–16 March 2018 in Oulu, Finland. The event was organized by the Soil protection and environmental protection technology association (Mutku ry). The days interested some 100 participants, including for example representatives from the biggest contaminated land consultant companies operating in Finland.

Riga successfully completed student contest for the best Mūkusalas territory development proposal

On 9 February 2018, at the premises of the National Library of Latvia, students from the University of Latvia (LU), Riga Technical University (RTU) and Riga International School of Economics and Business Administration (RISEBA) delivered presentations for the Mūkusalas territory development concept.
