Policy brief published: Making the most of brownfield sites in the Baltic Sea Region

Brownfield regeneration involves the redevelopment of underutilised areas of a city. This contributes to limiting urban sprawl and promotes investment to restore land that has been contaminated by industrial activity. As such, it is an important path towards more integrated, resilient and sustainable urban development.

Urban brownfields were seen as opportunities during the Final Conference of Baltic Urban Lab project

Baltic Urban Lab Final Conference on”Dealing with the Past & Planning for the Future – turning urban brownfields into possibilities” was held 6-7 September 2018 in Riga, Latvia.

The Final Conference of Baltic Urban Lab project brought together more than 60 urban planners, soil remediation experts, architects and other interested parties from Latvia, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania and Finland to explore the lessons learned from the project and by four piloting cities – Tallinn (Estonia), Turku (Finland), Riga (Latvia) and Norrköping (Sweden). The Final Conference was held in Spikeri Concert Hall which is a brownfield location itself, listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Riga. The Baltic Urban Lab Final Conference was moderated by architect Peteris Bajars.

The guide is targeted to urban planners and other experts interested to learn more how to develop  brownfield areas in cooperation with citizens, NGOs, land-owners, developers and other stakeholders.

Lessons learned from Baltic Urban Lab published!

During Baltic Urban Lab the project cities have explored different methods for stakeholder involvement and participation. Experiences from cities have been now gathered and analysed in one publication “Developing brownfields via Public-Private-People partnerships”.

Baltic Urban Lab video premiere!

A video has been produced by Laura Sarlin of UBC Sustainable Cities Commission to promote Baltic Urban Lab's Final Conference "Dealing with the Past and Planning for the Future - transforming urban brownfields into possibilities" that will be held 6-7 September 2018 in the City of Riga, Latvia. 

The video tells a story of the three-year project, focusing mainly on the last Joint City Pilot Review event in City of Tallinn, but also clips from previous project meetings and workshops from Turku, Tallinn and Norrköping could be seen.

Save the date - Baltic Urban Lab's Final Conference 6.-7.9.2018

Baltic Urban Lab Final Conference "Dealing with the past & Planning for the future - turning urban brownfields into possibilities" will be held in Riga, Latvia, during 6-7 September 2018. Two crucial topics will be covered around browfield development - how to deal with the site's past and possible contamination of soil and at the same time develop visions and plan for the future land-use of the site in cooperation with stakeholders.

Earth Autopsy makes it possible to interact with contamination in a new way

Since the Earth Autopsy launch back in December 2017, the visualisation tool has been presented to a variety of stakeholders and international audiences. Earth Autopsy has been developed by City of Norrköping in cooperation with a local company.
