Soil contamination in brownfields – how does it concern planning?  by Elke Myrhede

The guest speaker this time was Elke Myrhede. Her presentation title was called Soil contamination in brownfields – how does it concern planning?

In this webinar you could learn more about why contamination of soil and groundwater is an issue to concern in planning. The following three main objectives in planning were covered:

  • Safety and health
  • Environment and spreading of contamination to surrounding areas
  • Time and economy.

You will also get to know, how the City of Norrköping is dealing with the issue in the Inner Harbour of Norrköping. The Inner Harbour is located right next to the city centre on the other side of the river at the waterfront. The overall aim is to turn the Inner Harbour into attractive residential area with more than 2000 new apartments built. The Inner Harbour area is thus a highly contaminated former industrial site.

Elke Myrhede is a specialist on soil contamination and has been working at the city planning department of Norrköping since 2015. She has been working as a consultant for over 20 years mainly with surveying and remediating soil contamination in a lot of different places such as Öster Mälarstrand in Västerås, where a large facility of Vattenfall situated on the shoreline of Mälaren is transformed to a residential area.
